I got a call from PD Guy, the Program Director at a station I really like in Seattle, last week. He wanted to know if I would be interested in filling in for the station’s morning show host.
“Mister Host is going on vacation for 2 weeks and I really need someone to fill in.” said PD guy.
“Uhh, I’m not really a morning guy,” I replied, hoping he would hear the hesitation in my voice and realize that he was making a huge mistake in even suggesting that i get up at 4am to drive to the radio station and play DJ.
“No problem,” he said. “I don’t want a morning guy. I just want someone to, like, play a bunch of songs until Mister Host comes back. You’re perfect!”
So, here I am, sitting in the studio on the 16th floor of an office building in downtown Seattle. At this moment I’m playing “Talkin’ about a Revolution” from Tracy Chapman and drinking my 7th cup of coffee.
It hasn’t been a bad couple of days, so far. The getting up early part kind of sucks, but the morning guy’s co-host is here and she’s very cool and has been patient with all of my screw ups. It’s always hard to try and fill in for a morning show but I’m really not “doing a morning show”, I’m just like, “playing a bunch of songs”.
So far, so good.
